The Department of Defense announced today the possible sale to the Government of Italy of 734 STINGER Block 1 International missiles including 504 complete missile rounds without gripstocks, 194 partial weapon rounds without gripstocks, and 36 lot acceptance missiles; 194 gripstock control group guided missile launchers; support equipment; training devices; spare and repair parts; publications and technical data; support equipment; personnel training and training equipment; U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics personnel services; a Quality Assurance Team; and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $110 million. This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the military capabilities of Italy while enhancing weapon system standardization and interoperability. Italy will use the STINGER missiles to upgrade its air defense capability. Italy, which already has STINGER missiles in its inventory, will have no difficulty absorbing these missiles. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the region. The prime contractor will be Hughes Aircraft Co., Tucson, Ariz. There are no offset agreements proposed to be entered into in connection with this potential sale. Implementation of this proposed sale will require a Quality Assurance Team for two weeks in-country. Two contractor representatives representing varying technical skills and disciplines will be required to provide in-country support for six years. There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale. |
