The
new law recognizes that HIV/AIDS has
had a devastating impact on racial/ethnic
minorities in the U.S. African Americans
accounted for 49 percent of all HIV/AIDS
cases diagnosed in 2005.
The
new law codifies the Minority AIDS
Initiative as part of the Ryan White
HIV/AIDS Program in the Public Health
Service Act under Title XXVI and provides
funding for activities to evaluate
and address the disproportionate impact
of HIV/AIDS on racial and ethnic minorities.
Through
Parts A and B, metropolitan areas
and states will be able to compete
for funding to address disparities
in access, treatment, care, and health
outcomes.
HRSA
expects to award funds through the
Minority AIDS Initiative for Part
A and B programs in August 2007.
The
Minority AIDS Initiative funding for
Parts C, D and F (AIDS Education and
Training Center) programs will continue
to be awarded at the same time as
programs receive their other Ryan
White funds. |
