NEWINGTON, N.H. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the New Hampshire Bureau of Emergency Management (BEM), and Lowe's home improvement store of Epping will present a mitigation informational exhibit to teach New Hampshire residents how to better rebuild and protect their homes and prevent future flood damage.
The exhibit will be set up at Lowe's at 36 Fresh River Road, Epping on Saturday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mitigation specialists from FEMA and BEM will provide information on a range of repair options for flood damages and will be available to discuss and demonstrate protective measures.
Information and models demonstrating basic mitigation techniques for reducing damages such as elevating heating panels, electrical panels and water heaters, and installing back-flow valves on sewer/septic systems will be displayed. Brochures, booklets, and fact sheets will be available to explain a number of ways to minimize disaster damage to buildings.
"As our business is home improvement, that includes having the products and expertise to help people prepare their homes and properties before a disaster and to recover after a disaster hits," said Eddie Olson, operations manager of the Epping Lowe's. "We are proud to partner with FEMA and the New Hampshire Bureau of Emergency Management to get this important information to our neighbors who suffered damage from recent floods."
"This is an opportunity for people who have experienced loss and damage to their properties to talk to someone about what to do next," said Kenneth Clark, FEMA's coordinating officer for this disaster. "No appointments are necessary. We want people to get answers in just a few minutes."
Clark reminded victims of the recent floods in the six declared counties (Belknap, Carroll, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham and Strafford) that the first and most important step to state/federal disaster aid is calling FEMA's toll-free registration number 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA). The TTY number for speech-or hearing-impaired is 1-800-462-7585.
FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
