Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health
Meeting Summary: April 13, 2005
Global Tobacco Epidemic
Closing Comments from the Chair
Dr. Carmona closed the meeting by summarizing many of the issues he heard articulated
during the day. Although we have come a long way in tobacco control efforts, there is still
a long way to go and we need to continue to build partnerships beyond the confines of our
own borders. Furthermore, we need to improve our ability to translate the science that we do
have into effective interventions. Dr. Carmona offered his commitment to share the information
with HHS Secretary Leavitt and to continue to move forward on global tobacco control efforts.
Dr. Carmona thanked CDC and the Office on Smoking and Health for their leadership role in convening
the meeting and expressed his appreciation to Committee members, speakers, and the public.
The meeting adjourned at 4:25 pm.
