Cemetery Records

Many records kept in relation to burials can give researchers personal information about individuals not always available elsewhere in state government records. The Utah State Archives has copies of some records series from some municipally-owned cemeteries in Utah. In order to determine which records may be of use, the researcher will need to know in which municipality the desired cemetery is located. The Utah Funeral Directors Association maintains a complete Utah Cemetery Directory, including contact information. This may be used in conjunction with Utah State History's Cemetery Records database. This database is an ongoing project to document all burials within the state of Utah and is searchable by name of individual.

Cemetery records generally take two forms: records documenting ownership of plots, and interment registers which document burials in the plots in the cemetery. For genealogical purposes, interment registers are usually the most useful, though they vary in content from cemetery to cemetery. Plot ownership records may also contain data about the individuals buried in the graves.

The dates on the series list below indicate recordkeeping dates for the records; not all of the time span may be in the holdings of the Archives, but may still be in the custody of the creating agency.
