The
special U.S. envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan says the U.S. does not believe
Pakistan is a "failed state" even though it is dealing with
"enormous social, political and economic pressures."
Richard Holbrooke told lawmakers in Washington Tuesday the seriousness of
Pakistan's problems does not mean the country is on the verge of collapse.
Holbrooke testified before a House of Representatives panel (Foreign Affairs
Committee).
The veteran diplomat said Taliban advances have sparked a sense of panic in
Pakistan and the United States. He said Pakistan does face a serious test by
its enemies.
Holbrooke said the United States is committed to supporting and stabilizing a
democratic Pakistan.
