Age-Adjusted Hospital Discharge Rates for Diabetes as First-Listed Diagnosis per 1,000 Diabetic Population, by Race, United States, 1980�05

From 1980 through 2005, age-adjusted hospital discharge rates for diabetes as first-listed diagnosis declined 70% among whites (from 120.7 to 36.3 per 1,000 diabetic population) and about 55% among blacks (from 157.2 to 71.1 per 1,000 diabetic population). The rates were higher among blacks. In 2005, the age-adjusted rate for blacks (71.1) was 96% higher than for whites (36.3).
