Several agencies with an interest in the decommissioning of offshore oil platforms have
formed an Interagency Decommissioning Working Group (IDWG). Individual
participating agencies have been designated the lead in collecting
information on such subjects as shell mounds, liability responsibility,
scientific research, and timely removal of facilities. Issues will be
addressed through a series of local workshops and seminars. A session on
scientific research related to decommissioning was held during the MMS
sponsored Fifth California Islands Symposium (March 29, April 1, 1999)
at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in Santa Barbara. In
addition, information/technical papers will be developed by the Working
Group addressing some of the above decommissioning issues.
