TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHOSEN FOR NOAA UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

Precious Lewis of Tennessee State University is among 28 students from minority-serving institutions starting work today with scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration this summer.

“Working with our scientists on challenging research projects this summer will give these students a chance to enhance their education while helping NOAA carry out its mission,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Jr., Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.

The other students are from North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, Hawaii, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Puerto Rico.

All of the students are pursuing studies in a NOAA-related science and have completed their sophomore or junior class requirements. The students will work as paid summer interns for 10 weeks. A minimum 3.0 grade point average is required.

“This is the largest class of students we have had since NOAA began its Undergraduate Scholarship Program in 2001,” said Jacqueline Rousseau, director of NOAA’s Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions. “It is encouraging that there are so many qualified students interested in having an opportunity to intern at NOAA.”

The Commerce Department's NOAA is dedicated to enhancing economic security and national safety through research to better understand atmospheric and climate variability and to manage wisely our nation's coastal and marine resources.
