National Gallery of Art - EXHIBITIONS

IMAGE: World War II and the National Gallery of Art. On view until September 7, 2004

This exhibition is no longer on view at the National Gallery. Please follow the links below for related online resources or visit our current exhibitions schedule.

During the war years the museum opened its doors to thousands of young men and women in the armed forces. The Founders' Room, in the West Building, was transformed into a special lounge for their use. This room is now the setting for a special display to commemorate the museum's wartime efforts to protect its art collection and to provide respite and inspiration for uniformed personnel and war workers in the city. Original guest register pages recording thoughts of visiting servicemen and historical photographs are included in the installation.
