Multi-model Estimates of Atmospheric Response to Modes of SST Variability and Implications for Droughts

Abstract


A set of idealized global model experiments was performed as part of the U.S. CLIVAR Drought Working Group by several modeling centers around the county. These experiments are designed to understand the physical mechanism that relate changes in Sea-Surface Temperature (SST) to droughts/floods and other climate anomalies around the globe.

The relative role each of these patterns have in producing floods and droughts will be presented. Also, based on the results of these idealized experiments, the climate of the 20th century is able to be recreated with just the forcing from the three leading modes of SST variability. Much of the SST forced precipitation variability for the past century is explained by the three leading modes, one notable exception is the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.
