Case: Greenhill Marsh,
LA
|
Date of incident: September 29, 1992.
Location:
Timbalier Bay, Louisiana.
Trustees:
Case status:
Settled January 18, 1994.
Overview:
On September 29, 1992, a blowout occurred in Timbalier Bay, Louisiana at a well
owned by the Greenhill Petroleum Corporation. Between 72,000 and 122,000
gallons of light Louisiana crude oil were released into the marine environment,
impacting over 122 acres of intertidal marsh in the Bay.
NOAA staff worked with co-trustees to conduct the damage assessment, finding
that the spill's major impact was to intertidal marshes on the islands in
southern Timbalier Bay. The spill also affected marine and estuarine fish and
bottom dwelling species, birds and sediments. Because of the spill's size and
impact, the trustees performed an ecological analysis to determine the scale of
wetlands creation necessary to compensate for injuries, while minimizing both
the cost and duration of the assessment so that restoration could commence as
soon as possible.
