A fugitive wanted by the Savannah Chatham Metro
Police Department was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional
Fugitive Task Force and the Statesboro Police Department on July 9, 2008 in
Statesboro, GA.
Akeem Saad Johnson, 24, was being sought on a warrants issued in Savannah,
Georgia charging him with Robbery by Force in an incident that occurred on
December 21, 2007 at the Oglethorpe Mall in which the victim was assaulted
and then robbed of their watch and necklace. Johnson also had an outstanding Battery
warrant from an incident that occurred in July of 2007.
The case was referred to the U.S. Marshals Savannah Office of the Southeast
Regional Fugitive Task Force to help locate and arrest this subject. An
extensive investigation was conducted and numerous leads were worked by the
Savannah Marshals’ Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force. The investigation
lead the Marshals Task Force to an apartment complex on Rucker Drive in
Statesboro, Georgia. The task force members interviewed several residents of
the complex and were able to narrow the investigation to one apartment. The
Marshals Task Force and members of the Statesboro Police department went to
the apartment with a key provided by the manager. Officers knocked on the
door and heard a voice inside respond. Task Force members and Statesboro
Police officers went in to the apartment and found Johnson laying on a
mattress in the back bedroom. Johnson was arrested without incident. Johnson
was taken to the Bulloch County Jail to await pick up by Chatham County.
Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshals result in the
apprehension of approximately 36,000 federal fugitives. More federal
fugitives are arrested by the Marshals Service than all other federal
agencies combined.The Savannah Office
of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force is a team comprised of law
enforcement officers from the Georgia Department of Corrections, the Chatham
County Sheriff=s Department, the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police
Department, and the United States Marshals Service. The task force objective
is to seek out and arrest fugitives charged with violent crimes, drug
crimes, sex offenders, and other felonies. Last year, U.S. Marshals task
forces arrested more than 58,600 state and local fugitives on felony
charges.
