Burlington, NC
- The second of two murder suspects wanted in the death of Barry Hairston
who died March 30 from wounds he sustained in a shooting incident at the
Deep Blue Seafood on September 30, 2007 in Martinsville was captured by U.S.
Marshals from Greensboro, NC on Tuesday. Corey Demon Turner, 30, of
Martinsville was arrested without incident after marshals spotted him
leaving a residence at 450 Chapel Hill Road in Burlington, NC. Turner’s
charges were upgraded from malicious wounding to first-degree murder
following an altercation with the victim in which Turner and Christopher
Lerone Mitchell are charged with shooting Hairston. U.S. Marshals
apprehended Mitchell in Atlanta on December 17, 2007, but Turner remained at
large until yesterday. Information developed by marshals in Roanoke placed
Turner in Burlington and a request for assistance was forwarded to the
Marshals Office in Greensboro who immediately responded.
In addition to the first-degree murder charge,
Turner also faces charges of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony,
conspiracy to commit murder, and failure to register as a sex offender. In
addition, federal charges may be pursued by the Marshals Service for
violations of the 2006 Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act which
makes it a federal crime for failure to register as a sex offender and
leaving the state in which you are required to register.
Turner was held without bond and jailed in
the Alamance County Jail in Graham, North Carolina where he awaits
extradition back to Martinsville to answer to the charges. The Martinsville
Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Task Force in Roanoke conducted a
joint investigation resulting in the safe apprehension of this dangerous
suspect.
