Academic Research Enhancement Award

NHLBI Participation in Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) (RFA-OD-09-007)

The NHLBI will participate in the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) program, which is supported by funds provided to the NIH under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009, Public Law 111-5. The purpose of the AREA program is to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation's research scientists, but that have not been major recipients of NIH support.

The AREA grants create opportunities for scientists and institutions otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH programs, to contribute to the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort. AREA grants are intended to support small-scale health-related research projects proposed by faculty members of eligible, domestic institutions.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement will use the AREA (R15) mechanism.  The Project Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) will be solely responsible for planning, directing, and executing the proposed project.

The application due date is September 24, 2009.
