REVISED NHLBI SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FOR THE NIH MENTORED CLINICAL SCIENTIST DEVELOPMENT AWARD (K08) RELEASE DATE: January 29, 2003 NOTICE: NOT-HL-03-006 National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) This notice contains updated eligibility requirements, a link to special leave guidelines, and contact information for NHLBI staff to whom one copy of the application is to be sent and to contact for answers to questions related to programmatic issues. The information in this NOTICE replaces the corresponding information found in the NHLBI SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION TO THE NIH MENTORED CLINICAL SCIENTIST DEVELOPMENT AWARD (K08) published as Notice HL-00-002 in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts on November 18, 1999 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-HL-00-002.html). The NHLBI information supplements the NIH MENTORED CLINICAL SCIENTIST DEVELOPMENT AWARD PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT (PA-00-003) described in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts, 10/8/99 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00 -003.html), with additional information specific to the NHLBI award. Other information in the original NHLBI supplemental instructions remains unchanged. All information in the NIH Program Announcement pertains to the NHLBI award. Prospective applicants should use the NIH Program Announcement (PA-00-03), the supplemental NHLBI information, and this document in completing their applications. Applicants should use PA-00-003 on the face page of their application to identify that the application is in response to a Program announcement. Consultation with program staff listed below is recommended before submitting an application. REVISED OR NEW ITEMS FOR NHLBI SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Eligibility: Candidates must have a health professional doctoral degree, such as the M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or equivalent degree, and a professional license to practice in the United States. Documentation of active licensure should be included in the application. Guidelines for Special Leave: K08 Award recipients may take leave to train at another institution, take a leave of absence during the award period, or train at a lower level of effort for a longer period of time. K08 Award recipients should review a document describing the Special Leave Guidelines for Recipients of Mentored Career Awards at http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/funding/training/redbook/sl_guide.htm, which summarizes NIH and NHLBI policies for these situations.
