- Tips for evaluating websites.
- The benefits of using different search engines: the Big 3, top 100, metasearch, and visualization search engines.
- How to search for scholarly information, news, people, blogs, and images and non-text sources.
- General search strategies and methods for tapping the invisible web, the vast range of sources not covered by standard search engines.
Protocol Development:
Relevant Databases, Instruments, and Services Available Through the NIH Library
Tuesday August 26
2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Register at: http://training.cit.nih.gov/coursepicfull.asp?cnumber=974&term=08S
Protocol development requires a thorough understanding of the relevant research literature; knowledge of sources for instrument selection; and a review of adverse events for the drugs and technologies used in the study. In this class you will learn to use information sources, search techniques, and best practices for greater efficiency and effectiveness. The class will cover:
- Databases and websites for identifying questionnaires, scales, and instruments used in protocols.
- The importance of conducting a literature scan of the research topic at the beginning of the study.
- The need for a comprehensive adverse events search for drugs and technologies utilized in the study.
- Databases for the literature scan and adverse events search.
- Tools for organizing citations retrieved.
Examples of databases and tools to be discussed include ProQolid, Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HAPI), MICROMEDEX®, PubMed®, EMBASE™, DIOGENES® Adverse Drug Events Database, and Endnote®/Reference Manager® bibliographic software.
