S. 997—The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007

On March 27, 2007, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced S. 997, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007. The bill is an amended version of S. 5, and would require the Secretary of HHS to conduct and support research using human embryonic stem cells regardless of the date on which such cells were derived. The bill would also require the Secretary to conduct and support research involving methods of obtaining pluripotent stem cells that do not involve the use of human embryos. The bill has six original cosponsors: Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Harry Reid (D-NV), Gordon Smith (R-OR), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and Arlen Specter (R-PA).
