About Research and Instructional Services

Most members of the Research and Instructional Services department are Reference Librarians, who represent a subject specialty and serve as a liaison for the research needs of different academic departments or schools on the UNT campus. Many have an advanced degree in a particular specialty in addition to the Master's degree in Information and or Library Sciences. This adds an extra level of subject expertise to our services.

The Research and Instruction Services librarians also answer research or reference questions, assist with research, give research instruction classes, and maintain the Ask a Librarian service.

Research Assistance

The reference librarians provide research assistance to UNT faculty, staff, students and the community.  We answer short factual questions to very involved research that is in support of the publishing endeavors of faculty and students. We have working and searching knowledge of hundreds of journal databases and other locator resources at our disposal.  We can help you save time and find the best sources for your research needs.

To get research assistance, go to the Ask a Librarian service and choose the way you would like to ask your question.  Some of the choices are by chat, email, by phone, in person at one of our reference desks, or reference by appointment.

Research Instruction Classes

Librarians provide research instruction classes at the request of an instructor for his or her class.  The research instruction class focuses on the overall research needs of an entire class and or target a specific assignment.  Classes can be scheduled by calling the reference librarian who represents the particular liaison subject specialty, or Frances May in User Education at (940) 565-4812.   A minimum notice of two weeks is required to schedule a class.  Classes can be scheduled to take place in one of the libraries instruction rooms or the instructor's classroom.
