Academic Advising

All undergraduate students in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (college) are assigned an academic advisor by the head of the department in which the student will major. New students meet with advisors during orientation sessions and permanent advisors are designated shortly after classes begin. Students with an unspecified major will be assigned an advisor during new student orientation in an academic department where they will be advised.

Advisors in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences are faculty members who also teach the classes, advise student clubs, and network with businesses related to their profession. Therefore, faculty and students quickly become familiar with each other and develop a good working relationship. Students are encouraged to visit with their advisors about their academic concerns and future goals. Advisors can and will assist students with graduate school as well as career options.

Students in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences who wish to pursue professional degrees in medicine or law are advised by their departmental academic advisors and our college's pre-professional advisors.

Academic Counseling

Our college is deeply interested in the success of every student. At times, personal difficulties may affect academic performance. We are interested in providing students with the support they need to overcome these difficulties and achieve academic success. Support is available through the Office of Academic Affairs Academic Counseling Program.

The primary goals of the Academic Counseling Program are:

  • to assist any student, regardless of grade point average or classification, with issues that may be affecting the attainment of their academic goals
  • to assist students in identifying the source(s) of academic difficulties and design an action plan to resolve the issue(s)
  • to support students by helping them to identify available resources
  • to help retain students that are at risk for academic dismissal
