Dr. Keith Douce honored by the University of West Hungary

Last year, Keith Douce, co-director of UGA Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health (pictured above), spent six months in Europe developing collaborations and partnerships. Douce, an entomologist on the UGA Tifton Campus, was a Visiting Professor, Faculty of Forestry Institute of Sylviculture and Forest Protection at the University of West Hungary in Sopron during the 2008 winter semester.

He received a Rotary International University Teachers Grant to cover expenses in Hungary and was on study leave from UGA.

While at the university, Douce taught three courses: Invasion Ecology, Extension and Outreach, which focused on forestry Extension, and Forest Health from a North American Perspective. Sixty-five advanced undergraduates from several units of the university took these semester-long courses. The courses taught by Douce were entirely in English, a first for the university.

As a result of his teaching and collaborations at the university, the Faculty of Forestry voted to award Douce an Honorary Professorship, which was presented to him during the 200 Years of Higher Education in Forestry Celebration held at the university in September.
