The Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning (CALP) is an informal group of researchers at the University of British Columbia specializing in landscape visualization, environmental perception, public land management processes and sustainable landscapes.

 

CALP News Items

1. “Local Climate Change Visioning Tools and Process for Community Decision-Making” is a new GEOIDE Network Centre of Excellence in Geomatics funded Pilot Project (Phase IV) headed by Dr. Stephen Sheppard.

This project will be similar to the previous GEOIDE SII research, but will focus on the challenges of developing and scientifically evaluating a new decision-support process for climate change adaptation and mitigation, based on an integrated geovisualization system.

The management team exists of researchers and scientists from UBC, NRCAN, Queens, U of Alberta, CIRES, Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (U Vic), Environment Canada, U of Toronto, McMaster, U of Waterloo, U of Calgary, with support from numerous Partner and Affiliates. This pilot project was one of 9 successful proposals and the total award over 4 years is approximately $900,000.

A 2 day workshop on July 7 & 8, 2008 was held at UBC. Day 1 featured an overview of the SII Future Visioning of Local Climate Change project and its results, while Day 2 was to outline objectives and goals and for the management team to create workplans. 2. Ellen Pond, MLA 2008, wins a National Honor Award in the Research category at ASLA 2008 conference. “Revealing Climate Change Mitigation in the Landscapes of the Future: Retrofitting Residential Neighbourhoods, A Burnaby Case Study”.Click here for more information on her project
 

3. Social Science and Humanities Research Council, Standard Research Grant “Visualizing the Industrial North: Exploring New Ways to Engage and Inform the Public on Extremely Large Projects”, Co-applicant with Stephen Sheppard – PhD Research Stipend (Cizek) awarded $71,640 (April 2007 – March 2010).
 

4. The Sustainable Forest Management Public Opinion Survey is a current CALP project and one of the largest research studies conducted in BC on the perceptions and values of citizens regarding the use of forest lands. Click here for more information.
