New APHIS lab to help fight invasive species

(Jan. 16) The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service plans to open an Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection and Port Technology Methods Development Laboratory in South Miami, Fla., this year, according to a news release. Scientists at the facility will develop and validate commodity treatments and port inspection technologies used by APHIS and Customs and Border Protection to ensure that agriculture imports are free of invasive species, the release said.
