  • Although many parts of central and northern Malawi experienced dry spells from around mid December to mid January that resulted in crop wilting and threatened crop production prospects, rains resumed from mid January and have since progressed well. Crops that suffered moisture stress have recovered, and overall production prospects for the season look promising.
  • The number of households running out of their own-food stocks harvested last season has now peaked. The lack of household food stocks is most critical in the southern region, where households are depending almost exclusively on markets for food. Maize is readily available, but exceptionally high prices have severely limited food access for the majority of poor and some middle-income households. ADMARC is trying to ensure that all their markets are supplied but are facing difficulty coping with the demand emanating from the relatively low ADMARC maize price (MWK 52/kg) compared to over MWK 75/kg in public markets.
  • Prices have begun to stabilize or decline on some markets, attributed to an improvement in maize supplies as traders offload maize on to the market. In addition, the supply of maize to ADMARC markets has improved after ADMARC’s involvement in the distribution of agricultural inputs for the governments’ agricultural input subsidy program drew to a close at the end of December. While this has allowed ADMARC to concentrate in delivering maize to their markets, there is still need to intensify these efforts.
