Dan Chiras, Green Homes and Renewable Energy Expert
Dr. Dan Chiras is the President of Sustainable Systems Design, headquartered in Evergreen, Colo.
His company, which he founded in 1984, consults on residential green building design and renewable energy.
Dan is also the founder and director of The Evergreen Institute’s Center for Renewable Energy and Green Building, located in east central Missouri, an hour and a half west of St. Louis. Dan teaches numerous workshops on residential green building, passive solar heating and cooling, solar electricity, small wind power and energy efficiency.
Dan is best known for his numerous books and articles. To date, he has published over two dozen books, including many very popular titles, The Solar House: Passive Heating and Cooling, The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy, Power from the Wind and The New Ecological Home.
One of his newest books, which is currently being sold in Lowe’s and major book stores, is Green Home Improvement: 65 Projects that will Cut Utility Bills, Protect Your Health, and Help the Environment.
Over the years, Dan has consulted on dozens of residential green building and renewable energy projects for homeowners, developers and architects throughout the United States, Canada and Central America.
Dan lives in a superefficient passive solar home in Evergreen, Colo., at 8,000 feet above sea level, which he designed and helped build.
His home is made from numerous recycled and natural building materials and is powered entirely by solar and wind energy. Dan hasn’t paid an electric bill since June of 1996.
