SAGE Supports Reading at St Monica’s Primary School

SAGE staff meet pupilsSince 2003, SAGE has been involved in the Reading Partners Scheme run through Inspire, the Education Business Partnership for Hackney. 12 SAGE volunteers visit St Monica’s Primary School in Hoxton every Wednesday and read with pupils in year 3. The scheme gives children an opportunity to read aloud one on one with an adult, and aims to improve their reading skills and confidence, and encourage a love of reading! The SAGE volunteers benefit enormously from this experience, and it really puts our work as an educational publisher into context.

Number Partners at St Monica’s

As well as supporting reading at St Monica’s, SAGE participates in Inspire’s Number Partner scheme, which matches volunteers with pupils in Year 5 to improve numeracy skills. Every Wednesday, volunteers visit the school and play Maths board games, group numeracy games or the children’s favourite, Fizz Buzz! Not only does this extra time spent on Maths help to build the pupils' confidence, it’s rewarding and enjoyable for the volunteers.

SAGE Donates Books for Schools

Library

SAGE’s Books for Schools scheme, which has been running for 5 years, allows SAGE employees to nominate schools to receive a donation of £500 to purchase books for their setting. This year, 20 schools were given donations, and these included St Monica’s School in Hackney, Woodlands High School in Cardiff, and the Wa School on the Thai/Burmese border. With this money, St Monica’s School filled the shelves of their new library!

Chess Club

Last year, with the help of generous SAGE employees, Katie Metzler raised £250 for St Monica’s School through a cycle event at Hearn Hill Velodrome. The children who participated in the event had a fantastic time and felt really proud to be involved in something that would benefit their school. The money raised was used to buy equipment to start Chess Club at St Monica’s this year. It’s proved very successful and has been growing in number week on week. Year 5 pupils play against each other Thursday lunch times, and SAGE volunteers attend to mentor and support them. We look forward to summer, when Chess Club will be moved out onto the playground on outdoor chess tables, as we hope to encourage children to teach their peers.

Encouraging learning world wide

SAGE is strongly committed to the international dissemination of the scholarship we publish. We are particularly concerned to ensure its effective availability beyond the major industrialized nations. As part of that commitment, SAGE sponsors or supports a number of initiatives including:

  • Book Aid for Africa
  • The Journals Donation Program of the Soros Foundation
  • The World Health Organization HINARI initiative for access to the world's leading journals in health and medicine

Publishing interns

We offer internships to students from City University and Loughborough University who are studying publishing.
