“One grant awarded to the Government of American Samoa is provided to conduct a noise compatibility study for Pago Pago International Airport,” said Congressman Faleomavaega.  “Runway 5/23 was recently extended by 1,000 feet which brought the turning thrust closer to residential areas.  As a result, complaints have been lodged with airport management.  This study will allow for an assessment of current and future noise contours as well as help identify mitigation measures to resolve noise complaints.” 

       “The two remaining grants recognize the need for enhanced security measures at Pago Pago International Airport following the events of September 11,” said Congressman Faleomavaega.  “One of these grants entitles American Samoa to $350,000.00 to be used to conduct a study to assess future terminal development including security measures.  Additionally, American Samoa has also been awarded $380,000.00 for security enhancements.  This grant will provide federal funding for security enhancement in the terminal building at Pago Pago International Airport.  Specifically, this project consists of modification of the terminal to enhance airport security and to facilitate flow paths and movements of departing passengers.”

       “The projects funded are significant in that they deal with the local concern of noise control as well as the national and global issue of enhancing airport security measures.  I want to commend the FAA for its continued commitment to American Samoa and I also want to commend the local leaders for their involvement in these projects,” concluded the Congressman.
