FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[United States Congress]

WASHINGTON, D.C.—FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE ASG WITH MORE THAN ONE MILLION DOLLARS FOR 2001 ACTION PLAN

Congressman Faleomavaega announced today that Congress will provide ASG with $1,369,000 for purposes of funding Community Development Block Grants, Emergency Shelters, and Home Rehabilitation Programs.

“The funding is provided at the discretion of Congress.  Although ASG must apply for the money, ASG does not have to compete for this money,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.

“This grant award is part of a continued commitment in Congress to meet local needs and expand opportunities for all Americans.  In the case of American Samoa, these funds will be used for a variety of critical housing, public facility and community development activities,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.

“The funds will primarily benefit low and moderate income persons.  According to the terms of the award, ASG will use the funds for the operation of an emergency shelter, continuation of the homeowner rehabilitation program, renovations at a medical center, site improvements for the farmer’s market, exterior museum rehabilitation, and various other improvements to public facilities.  The local Department of Commerce will be responsible for the management and disbursement of these funds,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.

“I commend ASG for applying for these funds,” Congressman Faleomavaega said.  “I also commend my colleagues in Congress for their continued commitment to local communities across America.  Together, we are working to empower and strengthen our nation.  This is why you can be assured that I am firmly committed to continuing my service to the people of American Samoa.”
