Berry Encourages Fire Departments to Apply for DHS Fire Prevention and Safety Grants

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Marion Berry  (D-AR, 1st) announced today that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will begin to accept applications for its Fiscal Year 2006 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant program beginning Monday, December 4, 2006. The program will provide $27 million in funding to local fire departments working to enhance fire safety programs for firefighters and members of the public.

Applicants have until January 12, 2007 to apply for assistance. DHS will prioritize applications that target high-risk populations and minimize incidents of death and injury. Examples of past projects supported by the program include fire prevention and public safety education campaigns, juvenile firesetter interventions, media campaigns, and arson prevention and awareness programs.

Local fire departments can apply for assistance or learn more about the program by visiting www.firegrantsupport.com. The website provides guidance for preparing a competitive application as well as an overview of funding priorities and evaluation criteria. Applicants may contact the help desk with any questions at 1-866-274-0960 or firegrants@dhs.gov. The help desk will remain open Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm (CST).
