The field of bioinformatics has emerged in recent years in response to the rapid advancement in the research arena of molecular biology and genomics. Bioinformatics provides researchers with the tools, information technologies, and analytical methodologies needed to manage the large volumes of data generated by novel types of research -- and to harvest insights from the information collected.
At the NCICB, "Biomedical Informatics" is the integrating and enabling informatics infrastructure needed to break down barriers and silos across cancer research and health care. The infrastructure, tools and applications of Biomedical Informatics have achieved an innovative synergy between bioinformatics and clinical/medical informatics, pointing toward the delivery of patient-centric molecular medicine. Personalized, targeted cancer prevention and care will be realized by coordinating and sharing diverse data.
