Tag and Identify |
- Use Chemical Waste Tag (NSN-753O-OO-LO7-5985)
- When completing the Chemical Waste Tag, identify all major constituents and hazardous components by chemical name, not by acronym or brand name

Segregate |
Segregation and chemical compatibility information
- Mercury or mercury containing materials from any other waste
- Dioxin or dioxin containing materials from any other waste
- Peroxide forming chemicals from any other waste
- Oxidizers from organic compounds, flammable, combustible, and reducing agents (eg. zinc, alkaline metals)
- Aqueous wastes from organic solvents
- Inorganic acids from:
Organic materials Caustics and active metals such as sodium, magnesium, and potassium Chemicals which can generate toxic gases upon contact such as sodium cyanide and iron sulfide

Store Safely |
- Store in laboratory while awaiting pickup. Do not put waste containers in hallways or other public locations
- Ensure that all chemical waste containers are closed securely except at the time waste is added (No funnels left in open containers)
- Place chemical waste containers in a spill containment pan

Dispose of Safely |
- Do not discard waste chemicals into sink drains, with general waste, or with MPW
- Do not put heavy metal compounds, oxidizers, phenols, strong acids, or bases in a safety can
- Chemical waste MUST be picked up within 60 days of the collection start date

Chemical spills |
- First call 911 for clean-up. For questions later, call your Safety and Health Specialist, 301-496-2346
- For ethidium bromide spills, soak area with 50% MOPS(3_(N_Morpholino)propanesulfonic acid) (NSN-6810-00-L06-4830) in water and call 911 for clean-up

Explosive/reactive chemicals |

Laboratory Moves / cleanouts |
- Start planning as early as possible and call for information (301-496- 7990)
- Call 301-496-4710 at least 4 weeks in advance of anticipated laboratory move

Other |
- UPS Batteries must be removed from the UPS casing prior to pickup. Call SEIB, 301-496-4131
- Tissues in formalin or formaldehyde solution: drain off liquid and dispose through Chemical Waste Disposal Service; dispose of tissue per MPW section
- Empty chemical containers may be disposed of through the Chemical Waste Disposal Service
