Chemical Waste Management Procedures

Single containers of chemical waste
  • With a black marker, mark XXX through any label(s) on containers which contain anything different from that on the label
  • Print the word "WASTE" on each container
  • Complete and attach a Chemical Waste Tag for items not in their original container

Multiple containers of chemical waste
  • Multiple containers of compatible chemicals may be placed in a single box for disposal
  • Each chemical must be identified
  • Do not stack chemical containers on top of one another .Do not seal box
  • Complete a Chemical Waste Tag and attach to the box
  • Call for pickup as instructed on the Chemical Waste Tag

Larger Volumes of Chemical waste
  • To order containers for chemical waste volumes >2 liters, call the Chemical Move Service, 301-496-4710
  • Combine only compatible chemicals in a container
  • Complete and attach to the container a Chemical Waste Tag
  • Record on the Chemical Waste Tag each chemical added to the container
  • Call for pickup as instructed on the Chemical Waste Tag

Flammable solvents and aqueous mixtures containing flammable solvents
  • Use only the safety can provided by the Chemical Move Service, 301-496-4710
  • Complete and attach to the container a Chemical Waste Tag
  • Record on the Chemical Waste Tag each chemical added to the container
  • Contents of safety can should not exceed "fill line" on can
  • Call for pickup as instructed on the Chemical Waste Tag
  • Store waste container away from ignition and heat sources in secondary containment pans
  • For items with radioactive materials, please refer to the Radioactive Waste Section

Chemically contaminated solid waste
  • DO NOT USE an MPW box or orange autoclave bag
  • Place materials in a clear plastic bag (medium: NSN-8105-01-195-8730; large: NSN-8105-00-826-6468)
  • Close plastic bag with filament tape or bag closure tie
  • Place bag in a plain cardboard box
  • Secure box with filament tape, complete and attach a Chemical Waste Tag
  • Call for pickup as instructed on the Chemical Waste Tag
