09:17 AM ET 05.12 | The flap over a Brian Cushing re-cast doesn't sit well everywhere. First of all, we don't have an official explanation as to what Cushing did. We know the NFL suspended him for the first four games of the 2010 season for violating the league's anti-doping policy. But the NFL refuses to tell us what Cushing actually tested positive for. That's the key piece of evidence. ??? It's time the NFL and the players' union agree to start providing details to go along with positive tests.

MLB: Ely offers Dodgers hope

09:26 AM ET 05.12 | John Ely, with a sparkling performance Tuesday, is quickly making himself at home in the big leagues. For the second consecutive start, he did not walk a batter. He went after hitters. He looked like a veteran, not someone making only his third career start. He must be a frustrating pitcher to hit against. Ely doesn???t throw that hard, his pitches don???t have any unusual movement. But he???s around the plate, mixes speeds and keeps batters off-balance. He pitches. ... Three good starts is not a guarantee of anything, but for a troubled rotation with only three real starters, it at least offers much needed promise.

09:22 AM ET 05.12 | Much will be written of the Celtics-Cavs series in the coming days, and even Cavs owner Daniel Gilbert is on the record with his take. After [Tuesday's] game, in an exclusive interview with The Plain Dealer, Gilbert expressed some frustration at the effort level of his team that he's spending more than $100 million in payroll this season; a team he put together by sparing no expense in an attempt to win the title this season. ... "The last two home playoff losses and the manner in which we lost these games does not come close to being anywhere near the high expectations all of us have of our organization. Our fans and supporters deserve more."

09:32 AM ET 05.12 | While the "Why Not Us?" slogan played well in Boston in 2004, Philadelphia has co-opted it. The Flyers, who have won two straight to narrow Boston's series lead to three games to two in the Eastern Conference semifinals, want to join that select group. Fact is, they believe they will join that group -- even though they have lost the services of another starting goalie. "Without a doubt, I would love to be part of the next team to be able to do it," center Danny Briere said after Tuesday's practice in Voorhees. "I'd be lying to you if I said I didn't care about that, or if I didn't believe we can do it."

09:35 AM ET 05.12 | The big winners of college football???s bowl-a-palooza are teams such as Boise State, Utah and TCU, who could play in the Rose Bowl. If the non-Big Six powers can't play themselves into the national title game, they can at least have a shot at the Rose Bowl. That's right: The bastion of bowl tradition could have Boise State. The first time the Rose Bowl loses the Pac-10 and/or Big Ten champion to the BCS title game and a non-Big Six team qualifies for the BCS, the Rose must take that non-Big Six team.

Golf: Mickelson could take over No. 1 ranking

07:56 AM ET 05.09 | Phil Mickelson did what he had to do yesterday. Tiger Woods did what he has been doing. The results go beyond the leaderboard at The Players' Championship. Mickelson is in striking distance of the win, and if he does take home the title -- and Tiger finishes outside the top five -- Mickelson will have a new first in his career: the No. 1 World Ranking. Certainly, the rankings are a bit skewed right now, considering Woods has played so little this year. But Mickelson taking over the top spot would symbolize what appears to be a huge shift in both perception and reality. Mickelson is quickly becoming both the best and the most beloved. Tiger is quickly sliding in the other direction.

08:04 AM ET 05.09 | Roger Federer knows that a challenge awaits him at the French Open. Rafael Nadal will be on what has become something of his home turf: the clay at Roland Garros. Federer must be at top form to compete with him there and his semifinal loss to Albert Montanes in the Estoril Open yesterday did not bode well for his performance in the French Open. Federer looked off balance in just his fourth match on clay this year. He has a chance to get more comfortable on the surface defending his title Madrid before putting it on the line in Paris.

08:28 AM ET 05.01 | Let's be honest with ourselves, even though it's not Pacquiao vs. Mayweather tonight's fight should be a great one. Sure, Shane Mosley is getting on in years, and the only person we really want to see fight Mayweather is Manny Pacquiao, but tonight's fight is between two of the great pound-for-pound fighters of the last 20 years and should be a good one. At the very least, it will make up for some of the very lackluster bouts we've seen in the last few months.

10:57 AM ET 05.11 | Well at least the name. New Izod IndyCar Series CEO Randy Bernard is on a mission to separate the series from a controversial point in its history. Bernard says that, for many fans, the name itself brings up memories of the rift between the IRL and CART's Champ Car World Series. "The purists and traditionalists associate it with the split," Bernard said. "We need to get away from using it." While Bernard isn't making the change official yet, he wants the name phased out as much as possible.
