Biography

Congressman Gary Peters, U.S. Representative serving Michigan's 9th Congressional District in Oakland County, was sworn in on January 6th, 2008. A fifth generation Oakland County resident, Gary has dedicated his life to serving his community, his state and his country.

In the Michigan State Senate, Gary Peters earned a reputation as a thoughtful, bipartisan leader. As a Senator, Gary fought for fiscal discipline and tax fairness for Michigan families. Gary introduced three bills to cut middle class taxes his first day in office, and he ran his office so efficiently that he was able to return the equivalent of a full-year's operating budget back to Michigan taxpayers.

During his tenure as Commissioner of the Michigan State Lottery, Gary cut costs and came in under budget every year, increasing revenue for Michigan schools. As a Rochester city councilman, he saved taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by eliminating waste in the city budget.

The son of a World War II veteran, Gary followed in his father's footsteps by choosing to defend America in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He twice served our nation overseas, first in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch and again volunteering for duty after the terrorist attacks of September 11th. During his twelve years of service, he received numerous awards and citations, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

Gary is committed to educational excellence in Michigan and believes vibrant public schools and universities are central to Michigan's future economic growth. A product of Michigan schools and universities, Gary attended Alma College, earned a Master of Business Administration in Finance degree from the University of Detroit-Mercy and a law degree from Wayne State University. He recently completed a Master of Arts in Philosophy with a specialty in the Ethics of Development from Michigan State University.

Gary recently served as the Griffin Chair of American Government at Central Michigan University where he focused his teaching on major public policy and economic challenges facing Michigan.

Gary and his wife Colleen reside in Bloomfield Hills. They have three children, Gary, Jr., a recent Albion College graduate, and Madeleine and Alana, who attend Bloomfield Public Schools.
