Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be paid?

Yes. During the first year, fellows earn a salary equivalent to a GS 9, Step 1 salary. In the second year, they are eligible for salary equivalent to a GS 9, Step 2 with geographic adjustments. In the third year, they eligible for salary equivalent to a GS 11, Step 1. See the Office of Personnel Management Salary Table for more information.

Will I be a CDC employee?

Yes. You will be employed as a full time equivalent (FTE) during the fellowship.

Will I receive benefits?

You will receive the same benefits as other full-time CDC employees. 

Are international candidates eligible for PHPS?

No. You must be a U.S. citizen.

Am I required to relocate?

Yes. During the first-year CDC rotation, fellows are assigned to a CDC facility in one of these locations.

  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Washington D.C.
  • Morganton, West Virginia
  • Hyattsville, Maryland
  • Cincinnati, Ohio

For the 2-year field assignment, fellows are placed in a public health agency in the U.S. or one of its territories.

Am I required to travel?

Yes. Fellows may be required to conduct site visits, attend conferences, and participate in other developmental opportunities necessary for their assignments.

Where might I be assigned for my CDC Rotation?

Fellows will work in programs throughout CDC. Placement depends on your interests, skills, and the needs of programs. We do our best to match fellows with assignments that will provide them with the best opportunities for professional development.

Where might I be assigned for my 2-year field assignment?

Fellows are placed in a health department, community-based organization, or public health institute throughout the U.S. and its territories.
