PRCs Report Research in January 2009 issue of Preventing Chronic Disease:
- Leveraging a Partnership to Measure the Physical Activity of Tweens
In a physical activity survey of children in grades 5 through 7, researchers from the University of South Florida PRC and their partners found that more than 80% of children surveyed participated daily in vigorous physical activity; see “A Community-School District-University Partnership for Assessing Physical Activity of Tweens.” - New Web-Based Intervention for Managing Epilepsy
See “WebEase: Development of a Web-based Epilepsy Self-Management Intervention” to learn about the lessons learned from the formative research, development, and pilot-testing of an intervention conducted in partnership with the Emory University PRC. - New Public Health Approach to Preventing Chronic Diseases via the Workplace
Read “Workplace Health Promotion in Washington State” for a 5-step approach to preventing chronic diseases via the workplace. The approach was developed by Washington State employers, health departments, nonprofit organizations, wellness program vendors, and the University of Washington PRC.
Training Section Updated
Descriptions of 50 new training opportunities have been added to Training the PRCs offer for public health practitioners, advocates, and students.
Effective Intervention Added to the Selected Intervention Section
The intervention, Talking Parents, Healthy Teens, was developed by the UCLA/RAND PRC. The case study describes the work site parenting program, which promotes communication about sexual health between parents and their adolescents.
PRC Program Cosponsors the 20th National Conference on Chronic Disease Prevention and Control
The PRC Program is one of three co-sponsors for the conference, to be held Monday, February 23 – Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at the Gaylord National Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

Four New Minority Fellows Start Prevention Research (2008)
CDC’s Prevention Research Centers Program selects four new minority fellows.
Release of a Blue Ribbon Panel Report on the Prevention Research Centers (PRC) Program
The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) released a report "Community and Academia Working Together: Report of the ASPH PRC Blue Ribbon Panel."* The report, developed by an 11-member panel, assesses the PRC Program for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and stakeholders. The report highlights accomplishments over the program's history and sets forth recommendations for its future.
New Study Reports Effectiveness of a Work Site Program to Help Parents Talk with their Adolescent Children About Sexual Health
A study by the UCLA/RAND PRC found that a parenting program conducted at work sites, significantly increases and improves parent-adolescent communication about sexual health. See the July 2008 issue of British Medical Journal (www.bmj.com/ ),* article titled "Evaluation of Talking Parents, Healthy Teens, a new work site based parenting programme to promote parent-adolescent communication about sexual health: randomized controlled trial."
A New Intervention May Increase Employers' Use of Health Promotion Practices
A journal article in the July 2008 issue of Preventing Chronic Disease, "Employer Adoption of Evidence-Based Chronic Disease Prevention Practices: A Pilot Study," describes a promising intervention, Workplace Solutions, which suggests best practices employers can use to help prevent chronic disease among their employees. The program significantly increased the implementation of evidence-based practices by employers. The study is a joint project of the University of Washington PRC and the American Cancer Society Great West Division.

Study Finds Away-From-Home Food Intake Associated with Risk for Obesity in Children
A study by the San Diego PRC found that children who eat away-from-home at least once a week are at risk for obesity. See the May 2008 issue of Obesity (www.nature.com/oby/index.html),* article titled "Away-from-home Food Intake and Risk for Obesity: Examining the Influence of Context."
VERB Campaign's Use of Social Marketing
The University of South Florida's PRC co-authored an article, titled "Catalyzing Community Action Within a National Campaign: VERB Community and National Partnerships," in the June 2008 supplement of American Journal of Preventive Medicine.* The article describes the social marketing strategy used to sustain the immediate effects of the VERB campaign, designed to promote activity in youth.
Prevention Research Centers Program's 2008 Annual Meeting Concludes
The PRC Program's 2008 Annual Meeting was held March 25-27 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Lessons Learned from Engaging Partners in Evaluation
A journal article in Preventing Chronic Disease, "Engaging Partners to Initiate Evaluation Efforts: Tactics Used and Lessons Learned From the Prevention Research Centers Program," explains methods used and lessons learned from involving PRC Program stakeholders in the planning and development of a national program evaluation and PRC Program logic model.
Article on the Use of Community Coalitions to Change Policy and the Environment
"From Program to Policy: Expanding the Role of Community Coalitions," an article in Preventing Chronic Disease by the University of Arizona's PRC, on how five community-based partnerships went from improving health behaviors through programs to changing policy and the environment in counties along the Arizona-Mexico boarder.
