Computational Science R&D
for Advanced Fuel Cycles Workshop
August
10-12, 2006
Bethesda, Maryland
|
This Workshop is sponsored by the Offices of Nuclear Physics (NP) and Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) in DOE’s Office of Science. The purposes of the Workshop are to determine what nuclear physics R&D is needed for the Advanced Fuel Cycle (AFC), how such needs can be met within NP’s and ASCR’s existing programs and to determine what facilities are appropriate for this research. In addition, computing resources required for modeling and simulation appropriate to such an R&D effort will be developed. The format of the Workshop will include plenary talks on the first day to provide an overview of the AFC program and projected needs that could be supported by programmatic activities in the Offices of NP and ASCR. The Workshop will cover the following general topics: AFC overview and needs, nuclear measurements (including: accelerator capabilities for neutrons and instrumentation), nuclear data, nuclear theory and computing. The first evening and the second day will be devoted to the individual working groups discussing and defining the R&D issues associated with the four topical areas above. Initial reports from the working groups will be heard in plenary session at the end of the second day. Please note that the general aspects of the Workshop will conclude on the second day. A third day (morning only) will be devoted to drafting sections from each working group—for presentation to DOE. The final output of the Workshop will be a white paper on the conclusions and recommendations of the Workshop. It is anticipated that this document will form the basis of a solicitation from the NP Office, to the nuclear science research community, for FY’07 R&D funding. Lee Schroeder (Berkeley Lab)—co-chair
