The HEASARC Staff
More than half of the HEASARC staff are scientists who, in addition to
their programmatic responsibilities, are expected to spend 25% of
their time on active research. This philosophy of recruiting active
hands-on scientists to support the community ensures that the services
provided are the highest quality. The HEASARC scientists propose for
and frequently win observing time on the currently active missions and
also undertake AISRP and ADP funded research. The current HEASARC scientists
and their responsibilities are as follows.
Alan Smale (GSFC) is the HEASARC Director, responsible for the overall activity.
Lorella Angelini (GSFC) is the HEASARC Project Scientist,
and is responsible for the XANADU
software (XIMAGE and XRONOS packages), and is the Swift,
Suzaku, and
NuSTAR archive scientist.
Keith Arnaud (GSFC & University of Maryland) is responsible
for XANADU software (XSPEC) package and issues in X-ray
spectroscopy, the XSELECT analysis environment, and some other parts of
the FTOOLS package.
Padi Boyd (GSFC) coordinates the HEASARC's activities with the Guest
Observer Facilities situated in the GSFC Astrophysics Science Division.
Roger Brissenden (SAO) is the HEASARC Associate Director, with
primary responsibility for the interface between the GSFC-based activities of
the HEASARC and the Chandra X-ray Center.
Mike Corcoran (GSFC & USRA) is the Fermi (formerly GLAST) archive scientist, and is
responsible for the HEASARC Calibration Database (CALDB).
Steve Drake (GSFC & USRA) leads the user help desk, the
database table ingest into Browse, and is
archive scientist for the
INTEGRAL,
RXTE, and
XMM-Newton missions.
Dale Graeslle (SAO) is Chandra CALDB scientist and is
responsible for developing standard tools for the CALDB for file construction,
index building, while ensuring backward compatibility.
Gary Hinshaw (GSFC) oversees all CMB
science support and is the archive scientist for the WMAP mission.
Jim Lochner (GSFC & USRA) leads the HEASARC Education and Public Outreach program.
Tom McGlynn (GSFC) is responsible for the archive interfaces, leading the
interdisciplinary/inter-archive access activities, including coordination
with the Virtual Observatory (VO).
Bill Pence (GSFC) leads the FITS activities
including CFITSIO
package,
HEAsoft, and the fv program,
and is the PI on the Hera project.
Arnold Rots (SAO) is the Chandra Archive Scientist. He ensures
coordination and integration of Chandra data with the HEASARC interfaces, and
has developed bibliographic database software for multi-mission use.
Janet Weiland (ADNET) is responsible for CMB user and software support.
The non-scientist members of the HEASARC staff based at GSFC include
system analysts and programmers. These staff, some of whom have advanced
degrees in astronomy and physics, support data ingest, database population,
analysis software,
and Web programming, as well as supporting users of the HEASARC's services.
Mike Arida (SP Systems) coordinates the HEASARC
Guest Observer Facility, and is responsible for the updating and maintenance of
the WebPIMMS tool. He also has system
administration duties.
Paul Butterworth (ADNET) is responsible for cosmic microwave background
(CMB) user support and data ingest support.
Craig Gordon (RSIS) is responsible for the
development and support of the
XANADU software XSPEC.
Michael Greason (ADNET) manages the CMB web pages and data archive.
He also has system administration responsibilities for the CMB portion of
the HEASARC.
Laura MacDonald (ADNET) is responsible for the design and
development of the Browse and Skyview web sites.
Urmila Prasad (ADNET) provides CMB web site and database
administration support.
Michael Preciado (SP Systems) develops Virtual Observatory (VO)
applications and publishes HEASARC resources within the VO. He is funded
through the NVO.
Edward J. Sabol (ADNET) is the HEASARC's
database administrator and programs various Web-based applications (such as
ARK (formerly AKBAR), database applications, and client/server
software solutions (notably RPS) that support the
HEASARC's on-line services.
Karen Smale (SP Systems) is responsible for the
overall HEASARC Web design, some Web development, and much of the
HEASARC's print and Web graphics.
