Training Award
The NN/LM Southeastern/Atlantic (SE/A), as part of its outreach program, is accepting applications from SE/A network members to provide NLM system, World Wide Web training or technology-related classes in the Region.
Award Goals
The goal of the SE/A Training Award is to improve health professionals’, librarians’ and the public’s skills in accessing electronic health information.
Potential Projects
Funding can include but is not limited to:
- Health Professionals
- Public Health workforce
- Librarians
- Health consumers
- Peer tutors
- Faith or community groups
- Educators
The sessions may be hands-on practice or demonstrations if facilities are not available.
Some examples of activities that are eligible for funding are (this list is not meant to be inclusive):
- Training on NLM systems such as PubMed, MedlinePlus or NLM’s consumer health databases, ClinicalTrials.gov, and more.
- Training to identify, access, retrieve, evaluate, and use relevant electronic consumer health information resources and services.
- Training on the use new technology, such as mobile technology, to access and store useful health information.
- Training on how to provide health information services to consumers, including conducting the reference interview, understanding basic medical terminology, and obtaining full text of articles not available in their collection.
- Training on how to locate good sources of health information on the Internet.
Eligibility Requirements
- Full or affiliate SE/A members in Alabama, District of Columbia, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Library associations in the SE/A region representing a significant number of Network members.
- A Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Maryland, Baltimore is required for this award.
Application Process
- Eligible members can apply for up to $600 for each award.
- A minimum of 6 awards per contract year (May 1, April 30) is planned.
- Application should be made at least one month in advance of the program.

Budget Guidelines
Funding will cover costs for travel (per diems, hotel, transport, etc) reproduction, communication and equipment or room rental, if needed. Please provide an explanation for any costs not listed above.
No course development or indirect costs are allowed for this award.
Period of Performance
Projects should be completed within 12 months of project award.
Selection Criteria
Awards will be made within three weeks of application for activities held May 1, 2006 – April 30, 2011. Training sessions must complement the mission and goals of the NN/LM and the NN/LM SE/A program.
Reporting Requirements
An outreach reporting form must be completed for each session held along with a copy and summary of the evaluation used. The report must be received at the SE/A office within 15 days after the execution of the session. The form will be provided prior to the session.
Publication and Publicity
The awardee shall acknowledge the support of the National Library of Medicine whenever publicizing the work under this award in any media by including an acknowledgment substantially as follows:

NIH Policy on Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH-Funded Research
The Policy requests that beginning May 2, 2005, NIH-funded investigators submit to the NIH National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) PubMed Central (PMC) an electronic version of the author’s final manuscript, upon acceptance for publication, resulting from research supported in whole or in part with direct costs from NIH. NIH defines the author’s final manuscript as the final version accepted for journal publication, and includes all modifications from the publishing peer review process. The PMC archive will preserve permanently these manuscripts for use by the public, health care providers, educators, scientists, and NIH.
