 Ros-Lehtinen & Insurance Commissioner McCarty

To Host Townhall Meeting In Key West To Discuss Wind Storm Rates

& The Latest Preposterous Rate Increase

Monroe County, Florida ---- Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Florida's Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty will host a townhall meeting in Key West to talk about the windstorm insurance crisis in Florida, particularly in Monroe County, and to also discuss the latest rate increase by Citizens Insurance.

Monroe's rates will lead to an increase of only 1.3 % but that is because FIRM, other Monroe activists and Ros-Lehtinen made the last proposed windstorm insurance hike a very public issue: the rates for Monroe's residents were reduced by 32%. This reduction is now a mute point if the proposed increase is made.

The town hall meeting will take place Monday, November 27th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Westin Hotel in Key West, located at 245 Front Street.

Ros-Lehtinen has been tirelessly working with the grass roots organization Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM) and the Florida Insurance Commissioner to reach a consensus on this most vexing issue.  As a homeowner in South Florida, she understands that this is an issue that can have a very negative effect on Floridians, especially those that live off a fixed income and are now struggling to pay their mortgages.

Said Ros-Lehtinen, "I am very troubled by today's Miami Herald story on how windstorm insurance by Citizens will be hiked by 56%. That is just beyond the pale and all State and Federal legislators should make this their NUMBER 1 legislative priority to address. Nothing else comes close to affecting Floridian's in their pocketbooks. I hope that Monroe's residents take this opportunity up and come and discuss this matter with us on Monday, November 27th."
