Job Corps students rewarded in D.C.

Miami Herald Staff Report

How many students could expect to have breakfast on Capitol Hill with U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and have their picture taken with U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen?

Some Homestead Job Corps Center students got to do exactly that.

These ''keepsake'' moments were part of ResCare's 12th Annual Student Leadership Conference last month.

More than 150 student government leaders, representing all ResCare Job Corps centers, went to Washington from July 21 to 25 to participate.

In workshops, the students learned about leadership, diversity and career preparation.

In addition, Job Corps' national director, Esther Johnson, spoke to them.

''The student leaders had a wonderful time learning how our legislative system operates and actually meeting members of Congress who make laws and pass bills,'' said Tisha Holmes, student government advisor at Homestead Job Corps Center.

''For all of our students,'' she added, ``it was a rewarding experience and a dream come true.''

Job Corps is a program funded through the U.S. Department of Labor.

ResCare operates 22 Job Corps centers throughout the nation, including the one in Homestead.
