Washington, Jan 15 - The Alpine Township Fire Department has received a $44,982 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Department of Homeland Security to purchase a second “jaws of life” device and to replace inflatable rescue equipment.

“The new equipment for the Alpine Township Fire Department will help to improve the safety of local first responders and the local community,” said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. “It will enhance the capability of the department to fulfill its mission of protecting area residents around the clock.”

The “jaws of life” is a hydraulic device used to extricate people trapped in vehicles involved in traffic accidents, and the inflatable rescue equipment are rubber bags containing metal rods for lifting vehicles that have turned over.

“Our fire department is responding to more calls than ever before,” Fire Chief Ron Christians said. “We are excited about upgrading our ability to serve local residents when they become involved in emergency situations.”
