Washington, Jan 14 - The Holland Fire Department has received a $111,681 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Department of Homeland Security to purchase 57 ensembles of personal protective equipment.

“Today’s economy is forcing local governments to squeeze every penny out of their resources, so the grant will greatly help the Holland Fire Department to provide a critical service,” said U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland. “It will enhance the responsiveness and safety of first responders as they protect lives and property in the community.”

Personal protective equipment includes turnout coats and pants, boots, helmets, gloves and associated items that firefighters wear when responding to emergencies.

“Replacing the protective equipment has long remained a priority for our department,” said interim Fire Chief Chris Tinney. “We want to ensure that our first responders are fully protected when they encounter situations that threaten their well-being.”
