DOE’s ENERGY STAR OPERATION CHANGE OUT Reaches Combined Savings of Over $25.6 Billion

DOE’s ENERGY STAR® OPERATION CHANGE OUT – THE MILITARY CHALLENGE, an effort to replace incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), includes 152 military bases in 45 states, the District of Columbia, and 8 foreign countries as of mid-July. Collectively, these bases changed out over 856,800 incandescent bulbs, with lifetime savings of over $25.6 billion, 241.6 billion kilowatt hours, and 385.6 billion pounds of carbon dioxide.  More

DOE Building Technologies Program Directed Research Receives R&D 100 Award for Innovative Dynamic Insulation

The Oakridge National Laboratory (ORNL), in partnership with Microtek and Advanced Fiber Technology (AFT), received a prestigious R&D 100 Award on July 20, 2009, for the first microencapsulated phase change material that meets fire rating tests. This new generation of phase change material was added to conventional fiberglass and cellulose insulation to function as dynamic insulation.  More

LBNL Study: Building Commissioning is Cost-Effective Way to Cut Energy Costs, Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has released a report titled “Building Commissioning: A Golden Opportunity for Reducing Energy Costs and Greenhouse Gas Emissions,” which studied data on 643 buildings representing a total of 99 million square feet of floor space, and provides the largest database of case studies on commissioning new and existing buildings.  More

United States Signs Agreement with China on Building Energy Efficiency

Representing the U.S. government, DOE has signed an agreement with China to collaborate on energy-efficient buildings and sustainable communities, possibly including a shared demonstration project in China. The two countries are also establishing the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center. More
