BONO MACK: MANDATORY COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING IMPLEMENTATION UNDERWAY

Washington, Jan 15 - Saying that country of origin labeling (COOL) is a win for consumers and the agricultural community, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack today noted that the final rule for mandatory COOL was published in the January 15, 2009 Federal Register. Bono Mack has spearheaded the effort to ensure that fresh fruits and produce were labeled to indicate country of origin and successfully inserted the provision in the 2002 and 2008 Farm Bills. The rule becomes effective on March 16, 2009.

“Consumers deserve to know where their food comes from,” said Bono Mack. “It is exciting to see this new law begin to be implemented in stores across our country. Mandatory country of origin labeling helps us make informed decisions about the fruits and vegetables we buy. This is a win for consumers and our local growers, and I am proud to have been a part of this important effort.”

Bono Mack notes that copies of the final rule and additional information are on display on line at http://www.ams.usda.gov/COOL.
