Free Commercial Water Audit - Now Available to Both Large and Small Account Holders

How to Participate

Call 768-3633 to schedule your commercial water audit.

What We Offer

These audits provide information that allow the industrial-commercial-institutional (ICI) customer to see where they are using water and to help them develop target areas where water conservation improvements can be effectively implemented. A water use evaluation report includes:

  • a water balance
  • opportunities for water conservation
  • and estimated payback periods for each recommended conservation measure.

Eligibility Criteria

The Water Authority offers free water use audits to both residential and non-residential water customers. For ICI audits, the Water Authority screens the request and, if it is approved, gives the customer's information to the Water Authority's engineering consulting firm on contract.

Field Visit

The engineer visits your facility to:

  • Evaluate onsite water use including wash water, cooling water, process water, and irrigation water;
  • Inventory equipment and fixtures; and
  • Identify potential process changes that may be appropriate for water conservation at your facility.

Water Use Analysis

The engineer determines a water balance using at least three years of historic water usage. To identify opportunities for water conservation, the engineer then analyzes the collected information from the field visit. Analyses include an estimated breakdown of current water use, projected water use after recommended water conservation measures are implemented, estimated cost of water conservation measures, and payback time of the investment. Water conservation measures that have a payback of up to ten years are considered cost-effective, and therefore, encouraged by the Water Resources Division.

Audit Report

The engineer prepares the Water Use Report & Conservation Plan, which comprehensively summarizes the results of the field visit and audit. A copy of the audit report is sent to the ICI customer and to the Water Authority Water Resources Division.

Audit Follow-up

If requested by the Water Authority, the engineer will perform a follow-up consultation with the ICI facility to assist with water conservation measure implementation or additional guidance with water conservation issues.

Program Facts

The Water Use Audit Program has sponsored over 125 audits to ICI customers since it began in early 1999. Actual post-audit savings are eight percent on average, with an estimated potential savings of 30%. Toilets and landscaping provide the largest potential savings; however, all possible water conservation measures and savings are listed in the report.
