  • Nearly ½ of the over 6 million workers in Illinois are professionals, skilled technicians, craftspeople, or machine operators
  • Over 12.9% are employed in manufacturing
  • 17.1% of the state's workforce are employed in goods-producing industries.
  • Illinois is ranked 5 th in the nation and 2 nd in the Great Lakes region in Value Added through manufacturing.
  • 56.2% of the state's workforce have gained education beyond high school.
  • Illinois worker productivity exceeds the U.S. average by $0.35 per hour.
  • 48 Community Colleges provide the state's current and future workers training in over 240 different occupations.
ILLINOIS - MAINTAINING A COMPETITIVE EDGE

Having the best workforce today doesn't mean it will be that way tomorrow. That's why Illinois is always working to maintain its competitive edge through innovative and wide-ranging job training and development programs.

WORKER TRAINING IN ILLINOIS:

  • Strategic Deployment of Job Training Resources
    Through a program called the Critical Skills Shortage Initiative, for the first time ever, Illinois is linking federal job training dollars in a way that helps serve the Illinois economy. This means Illinois is training the right people, for the right jobs, in the right parts of the state. This new innovation is receiving national attention, and makes Illinois a job training leader.
  • Reimbursing Businesses for Job Training
    Through a new program called the Employer Training Investment Program. The state may now reimburse businesses for up to 50% of the costs of training their currently employed workers. That means in Illinois, it is less expensive to keep your employees well trained and productive.
  • Statewide Job Training Network
    Almost 40 public community college districts throughout Illinois partner with the state and use state-funded grants to keep the local workforce well trained and effective. That means in Illinois, your will find a well-trained workforce in every corner of the state.
