Question Taken at January 9, 2009, Daily Press Briefing

Israeli Use of U.S. Provided Weaponry

Question: Is Israel using depleted uranium, white phosphorus, and cluster munitions in its offensive against Gaza?  Is the use of these three munitions considered a war crime?  How is the U.S. monitoring Israel’s use of U.S. provided weaponry in this conflict?

Answer: On the employment of weapons and ammunition in Gaza, we refer you to the Israeli government.

That said, the United States expects any recipient of U.S. military assistance to use those items in accordance with international law and under the terms and conditions of any U.S. transfer or sale.

The U.S. takes proper end use of U.S.-origin material seriously. If a country is found to be using U.S.-provided weapons for unauthorized purposes, the U.S. will take appropriate corrective action.
