Notice Number: NOT- HL-08-110
Key Dates
Release Date: January 25, 2008
Issued by
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/)
The purpose of this notice is to announce that the NHLBI will now accept applications that propose to work with all vertebrate species to elucidate the natural molecular and cellular adaptations to extreme environmental conditions that would rapidly evoke life-threatening cardiovascular or respiratory responses in humans. Previously, applications were restricted to studies of evolved adaptations in mammalian species. The scope is now broadened to support studies of all vertebrate species evolved to thrive under extreme environmental conditions including food scarcity, limited access to oxygen, temperature extremes, high salinity, or similarly harsh habitats. The overall objective remains the same: to identify new targets for development of novel therapeutic interventions to treat and prevent heart, blood, and lung diseases and sleep disorders in humans.
