The Farm Water Source Program is a co-operative venture between The Manitoba Water Services Board (MWSB) and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (PFRA).
Adequate supplies of suitable water for farm needs are often difficult to obtain in Manitoba. Together, MWSB and PFRA provide a comprehensive farm water source development program to assist Manitoba farmers in developing a satisfactory water supply to meet their needs.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be bona fide farmers.
- To obtain assistance, farmers must make application to MWSB and/or PFRA before starting construction.
- Projects must meet established standards and specifications.
- Where approvals for licences are required, these must be obtained prior to payment of grant.

Technical and financial assistance from the two agencies may be available depending on the type of activity.
Technical
MWSB
- well construction
- water treatment
- water supply design
- water supply pipelines
PFRA
- well construction
- dugout construction
- dam construction
Financial
MWSB
- A water source which meets the farm’s water needs but does not qualify for PFRA assistance. Some examples are:
- supervised test drilling
- farm pipelines beyond PFRA maximum contribution
- farm (not domestic) water treatment
MWSB financial assistance on approved costs designed by MWSB staff, installed as per design and specifications.
PFRA
- farm wells
- farm dugouts
- farm dams
- farm pipelines
PFRA financial assistance is based on a unit cost (depth, volume) or one-third of the eligible costs, whichever is less, up to a maximum amount per farm.
